IMMUNOLOGY 2015™

At IMMUNOLOGY 2015™, the Committee on Public Affairs (CPA) hosted a session entitled “Funding for Immunology Research: Non-Federal Opportunities and NIAID Program Update.” The session, which was chaired by CPA Chair Clifford Harding, M.D., Ph.D., featured presentations by William Chambers, Ph.D. (American Cancer Society), Gwen Nguyen (Indiegogo), Bruce Walker, M.D. (Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT, and Harvard), and Daniel Rotrosen, M.D. (NIAID).

IMMUNOLOGY 2014™

At IMMUNOLOGY 2014™, the Committee on Public Affairs (CPA) hosted a session entitled “Rock-Talking with Sally Rockey: The Issues, the Blog, and the Woman Behind It All.” The session featured the Director of the NIH Office of Extramural Research Sally Rockey, Ph.D., and was chaired by CPA Chair Elizabeth Kovacs, Ph.D.

AAI also celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Public Affairs program at IMMUNOLOGY 2014™ with a reception and a performance by the political satire group The Capitol Steps. The CPA reception featured thoughtful remarks by AAI President Marc Jenkins, Ph.D.

IMMUNOLOGY 2013™

At IMMUNOLOGY 2013™, the Committee on Public Affairs (CPA) hosted a session entitled "The Importance of Communicating Science in an Era of Doubters and Deniers." The session was designed to stress the importance and value of communicating science to the public.

IMMUNOLOGY 2012™

At IMMUNOLOGY 2012™, the Committee on Public Affairs (CPA) held two sessions organized by the committee and chaired by CPA chair Derry Roopenian, including "Meet the Advocacy Partners" and "NIH Peer Review: Understanding the New System."

IMMUNOLOGY 2011™

At IMMUNOLOGY 2011™, the Committee on Public Affairs held a session, "Got Funding? Why Your Voice is Needed on Capitol Hill." The session included talks by Jeff Frelinger, Paul Allen, Gail Bishop, Olja Finn, and Gary Kline.

The session was organized by the Committee on Public Affairs and chaired by AAI President Jeff Frelinger.

IMMUNOLOGY 2010™

At IMMUNOLOGY 2010™, the Committee on Public Affairs held three sessions. The first, "Big Funding + Big Opportunities = Big Science? NIH Priorities in the Post-Stimulus Era," included talks by Anthony S. Fauci, Richard J. Hodes, Stephen I. Katz, and John E. Niederhuber. The second session, "Protecting Animal Research in the Face of Legislation, Extremists, and Public Ambivalence," featured Frankie Trull, and Drew Ptasienski. The third session, "Meet the Advocacy Partners," included an oppurtunity to meet representatives from Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation, American Association for Cancer Research, Arthritis Foundation, Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, Immune Deficiency Foundation, and Infectious Diseases Society of America.

All sessions were organized by the Committee on Public Affairs and chaired by John R. Schreiber, Tufts University School of Medicine; Chair, AAI Committee on Public Affairs.

IMMUNOLOGY 2009™

At IMMUNOLOGY 2009™, the Committee on Public Affairs held three sessions. The first, "IMMUNOLOGY at CDC: Research Opportunities in Public Health," included talks by Alison C. Mawle, Conrad Quinn, and Ellen Kersh. The second session, "Good Science Gone Bad: "Dual Use" Research and How It Affects You," featured Paul S. Keim, David A. Relman, and David R. Franz. The third session, "Meet the Advocacy Partners," included an oppurtunity to meet representatives from American Diabetes Association, Arthritis Foundation, National Alopecia Areata Foundation, and International Pemphigus & Pemphigoid Foundation.

All sessions were organized by the Committee on Public Affairs and chaired by William R. Green, Dartmouth Medical School, Chair, AAI Committee on Public Affairs

Experimental Biology 2008

At Experimental Biology 2008, the Committee on Public Affairs held a session in conjunction with Experimental Biology 2008. The session, "Peer Review at NIH: Making Sure the System Works," included talks by Lawrence A. Tabak, and Keith R. Yamamoto.

The session was organized by the Committee on Public Affairs and chaired by Olivera (Olja) J. Finn, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, AAI President.

IMMUNOLOGY 2007™

At IMMUNOLOGY 2007™, the Committee on Public Affairs held two sessions. The first, "Advocating for Biomedical Research: The Top Ten Things You Should NOT Say While Educating Lawmakers," included talks by Gail A. Bishop, Bonnie Blomberg, William R. Green, Lauren G. Gross, Louis B. Justement, Gary Kline, and Jon Retzlaff. The second session, "Meet the Directors: NIH Priorities, Funding, and You," featured Anthony S. Fauci, Richard J. Hodes, and Alan M. Krensky.

All sessions were organized by the Committee on Public Affairs and chaired by Ellen Kraig, Univ. of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio; Chair, Committee on Public Affairs.

IMMUNOLOGY 2006™

At IMMUNOLOGY 2006™, the Committee on Public Affairs held one session and an awards reception. The session, "Pandemics and Bioterrorism: Why IMMUNOLOGY Research May Save the World," included talks by Anthony S. Fauci, Jacqueline M. Katz, and Peter Palese. At the meeting the AAI Service Award was presented to Vicki and Fred Modell, Co-Founders, The Jeffrey Modell Foundation. The Modells were introduced by Ellen Kraig and presented the award by Paul M. Allen.

All sessions were organized by the Committee on Public Affairs and chaired by Ellen Kraig, Univ. of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio; Chair, AAI Committee on Public Affairs.
